Dental fillings come in many forms. Usually, dentists will use different materials based on a variety of factors such as the preferences of the client. Here are some common materials that are used for fillings:
These consist of an amalgamation of various metals chiefly silver. They are tough and do not wear out easily. They are also relatively inexpensive. The down side to using amalgams is that they are darker than teeth and thus stand out rather conspicuously. For this reason, people don’t use them for front teeth.
This is a great filling that can last for decades and is well tolerated by gum tissue. The down side however is how much gold fillings cost and also the fact that it may require a several visits to get gold fillings done properly.
Dental fillings are necessary for preventing further erosion of a tooth. If a cavity has distorted the shape of a tooth, fillings might help restore the original shape of the tooth, thus offering dual benefits to the patient. Fillings are typically used when the cavities are still relatively small and have not gone deeper into the root of the tooth. In deeper cavities, dentists may recommend using a crown.
