Retainers & Aftercare in Westchester NY | Guerrino Dentistry

Why Do You Need Retainers & Aftercare?

The teeth are somewhat “unstable” immediately after brace removal. You will need to be fitted with retainers to help provide proper completion of the orthodontics treatment. It is also recommended that you see the dentist for regular cleanings in order to completely remove the left-over adhesives on your teeth. You should also consider having your teeth whitened as noticeable color differences are expected on the areas where the brackets were placed.

What Does Guerrino Dentistry Offer For Retainers & Aftercare?

With or without braces, the teeth are bound to shift naturally as the person ages. Retainers will prevent this movement and will help maintain the alignment gained after correcting with braces. Upon completion of treatment, our dental experts will remove your braces using a simple and painless process. The bond that connects the brackets to the teeth will be gently broken. The adhesive bond is released to completely remove the brackets. Approximately one to two weeks later, you will be scheduled for a retainer placement. You can have either a fixed or a removable retainer.

With removable retainers, the dentist will advise how long you should wear them in a day. They are the best choice if you want to have a better access when brushing or flossing. You can also choose to remove them during mealtimes. On the other hand, you can also have a fixed retainer that is permanently bonded to the back of the teeth. It is less visible but more difficult to clean. Either way, retainers are recommended to ensure that a relapse will not occur.
