Even if you've taken good care of your teeth through the years, and particularly if you haven't, you may be suffering from tartar buildup and plaque in certain areas. The best course of action here is to get it taken care of before it leads to something far more serious and the need for surgery, implants, and more. We at Guerrino Dentistry understand that, even with the best flossing and brushing practices, stuff happens! Thanks to our experienced, knowledgeable, and friendly professionals, however, we can get your teeth back to a healthier state, giving you something to really smile about.
Root planning and scaling is used to treat gum disease and is a method of deep cleaning below the gum line. Plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, causes gum disease. It's always there! But when allowed to collect, bacteria caused by plaque can make your gums inflamed. This results in your teeth and gums separating and the formation of pockets or spaces. Regular brushing cannot remove plaque from those pockets.
Guerrino Dentistry understands that not everyone is excited about going to the dentist. With a calm and secure atmosphere, our friendly, caring staff will do all we can to dissuade any fears or anxiety. Remember that scaling and root planing now could prevent the need for surgery or implants down the line.
Because, as stated above, regular flossing and brushing can't remove the plaque that builds up in pockets or spaces between your teeth and gums, it must be dealt with in a different way. Tooth and bone loss could be a result if that plaque is not removed. The point of scaling and root planing is to head off gum disease before it damages below gum line structures. Chronic periodontitis patients (when gum disease goes past the point of mere gingivitis) equate, in the United States, to just over 47% of over-30 adults. The process of scaling and root planing is not only beneficial but essential to individuals such as this.
If, of course, all you need is a regular cleaning, the experts at Guerrino Dentistry will never recommend work that isn't needed, beneficial, or advisable.
At Guerrino Dentistry, we provide complete, helpful information to our patients before any procedure. We want you to be as informed as possible so that, with our guidance, you can make the best decisions for your oral health.
The deep cleaning method of root planing and scaling has essentially two parts. When, below and above the gum line, your dentist removes all of the tartar (hardened plaque) and plaque, that is called scaling. The dentist will make sure that, all the way down to the bottom of the pocket, your teeth are clean. To help your gums reattached to your teeth, your dentist will then begin to smooth out your teeth roots. This is called root planing. A local anesthetic is usually sufficient, and the process can be completed, ordinarily, in a couple of visits.
Guerrino Dentistry will see to it that you have the additional information that you need for your aftercare. For as much as a week, or as little as a day or two, you may experience sensitivity. Your gums may bleed slightly, feel tender, or be swollen. A mouth rinse or pill may be prescribed by your dentist to help with any discomfort while you heal. As a follow-up, to measure the depth of your pockets and to see how healing is progressing, your dentist will schedule another visit. Only if the pockets have worsened will your dentist be likely to recommend more treatment.
For those with a tight budget, we also offer Guerrino Dentistry Insurance plans, 0% financing, dental credit cards, and more.
