The color of teeth is created by light reflecting on the enamel that covers the tooth and the color of dentin; the material that lies underneath the enamel. The thickness or thinness of enamel is affected by genes and in turn, affects the way your teeth look. This is because if your enamel is thin, it will allow more of your dentin to show and this affects the color of the teeth.
The other role that genes play is to affect the smoothness of the enamel which in turn has an effect on the light that bounces off the tooth. Beyond genes, the color of your teeth can be affected by the food you eat, bad oral hygiene or simply the natural process of aging. Teeth whitening is thus an easy way to remove the stains and restore the shine in one’s smile quickly and effectively.
